Freshman Swimmer Splashes into Championship Final

Gators sent five swimmers to the 200 freestyle event at the 2017 NCAA Men’s Swimming Championship, but Maxine Rooney, a freshman, was the only Gator to make the cut.

Rooney out swam his opponents and Gator teammates at the prelims as he posted a second place finish with a time of 1:33.88, earning himself a spot in the championship final.

Rooney will be one of three freshman to compete in the championship final as he looks to add another National Title to the record books.

The Gators have already tallied up two National Titles during this years Men’s Swimming Championship. Juniors Caeleb Dressel and Mark Szaranek are the ones responsible for bringing the first two National Titles back home to Gainesville this year, but they aren’t finished yet as they will compete again in their respected events to try to add to their accomplishments.

The Gators currently rank third in team standings with a combined score of 138.5 points. University of Texas and University of California are the only teams to beat as we near the end of this year’s championship.

The championship final will take place at Indiana University’s Natatorium on Friday, March 24 at 6 p.m. The 2017 Men’s Swimming Championship will come to a close on March 25.
